Abortion

Abortion is one of the most significant moral issues of our day with emotions running extremely high. As to what a Christians perspective should be on this subject can be found in God's word.

Genesis 9:6-7 " Whosoever sheds a man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God he made man. And you, be you fruitful, and multiply; bring forth abundantly in the earth, and multiply therein."

The command is to multiply, have lots of children, to not want children goes against what God wants.

Ezekiel 33:25 "Wherefore say unto them, Thus saith the Lord God; Ye eat with the blood, and lift up your eyes toward your idols, and shed8210 blood: and shall ye possess the land?"

8210 = A primitive root; to spill forth (blood, a libation, liquid metal; or even a solid, that is, to mound up); also (figuratively) to expend (life, soul, complaint, money, etc.); intensively to sprawl out: - cast (up), gush out, pour (out), shed (-der, out), slip.

Exodus 20:13 & Deuteronomy 5:17 " You will not murder."

Exodus 21:22-23 " If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief [not intentional] follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman's husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. And if any mischief follow [deliberate hurting of the unborn child], then thou shalt give life for life,"

Deuteronomy 27:25 " Cursed be he that takes reward to slay an innocent person."

Psalms 139:13-16 " For you have possessed my reins: you have covered me in my mother's womb... My substance was not hid from you, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Your eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in your [the Lords book] book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them."

Jeremiah 1:5 " Before I [the Lord] formed you in the belly, I knew you; and before you came forth out of the womb I sanctified you, ..."

Romans 14:11-12 " For it is written, As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God. So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God."

1 Enoch (Ethiopic) Chapter 99 3-5 "In those days make ready, ye righteous, to raise your prayers as a memorial, And place them as a testimony before the angels, That they may place the sin of the sinners for a memorial before the Most High. In those days the nations shall be stirred up, And the families of the nations shall arise on the day of destruction. And in those days the destitute shall go forth and carry off their children, And they shall abandon them, so that their children shall perish through them: Yea, they shall abandon their children (that are still) sucklings, and not return to them, And shall have no pity on their beloved ones."

2 Sibylline Oracles 279-282 "Again, those who defiled the flesh by licentiousness, or as many as undid the girdle of virginity by secret intercourse, as many as aborted what they carried in the womb, as many as cast forth their offspring unlawfully."

3 Sibylline Oracles 765 "rear your own offspring and do not kill it, for the Immortal is angry at whoever commits these sins."

Reading from the above, it seems clear that;

  • The command is to multiply and have lots of children .
  • God forbids us to take the life of another person, except in those circumstances that he alone has out lined in his word, and abortion is not listed as one of them.
  • At the time of conception, in the womb, God knows us.
  • Everyone will have to give account to God some day.
