Why Are Some Christians Defensive About "Evangelism?"
For many, the idea that Christians would have a problem with evangelism would only make them scratch their heads in bewilderment. Yet within some of the churches of God "evangelism" is equated with apostacy. Where did people get this idea?
Some are afraid to allow members to even think teaching “evangelism” as a responsibility of members, and the local congregations is the thin-edge of a wedge of heresy. Their leaders say that their congregations are healthy enough already and everything is under control.
Too many people don't believe that Sabbath-keeping congregations can make disciples in this day and age without watering down sound doctrine or bribing people to come.
You may be experiencing this “dynamic tension” regarding evangelism in your own congregation. Perhaps God is stirring up the Holy Spirit within you to become more fully engaged in the Great Commission of Matthew 28. While figuring out what we should be doing may be frustrating at times, it is a wonderful mission He has given to each of His children through His son, Jesus Christ.
